RV & Van Life Power: What You Actually Need

RV and van setups tend to get over-thought. Between built-in house batteries, solar arrays, and inverter systems, it's easy to end up planning a system far more complex than a weekend or a season on the road actually calls for. Here's what tends to matter, and what doesn't.

What you're actually running

Most van and RV power needs break down into a short list: a fridge, phone and laptop charging, some lighting, maybe a fan or a small heater, and occasionally a CPAP machine overnight. Very few setups need to run a microwave or an air conditioner off battery power alone, those are better handled by shore power or a generator when you're hooked up.

Sizing for how you actually travel

Charging on the road

A vehicle's 12V outlet lets you top up while you drive, which covers a lot of ground if you're moving most days. Solar panels pick up the slack when you're parked for extended stretches. Shore power at a campground, when available, is the fastest option of all, worth using whenever it's on offer even if you don't strictly need it yet. Where people over-buy

It's tempting to size up "just in case," but a bigger unit means more weight, more cost, and slower full charges. Most van and RV setups are better served by a right-sized station plus one extra battery for longer trips, rather than the single largest unit available. If your trips grow in length over time, an add-on battery is a cheaper way to scale than replacing the whole unit.
