When people start shopping for backup power, the first fork in the road is usually gas generator or battery power station. Both keep the lights on. They get there in very different ways, and the right choice depends more on your situation than on which one is "better."
A gas generator runs an engine, which means noise for as long as it's running, and exhaust that has to vent somewhere safe, never indoors or in an enclosed garage. A power station is silent and produces nothing to vent, so it can sit in a bedroom, a home office, or right next to the fridge it's powering without any of those tradeoffs.
Generators need fuel stored, rotated, and treated, plus periodic engine maintenance, oil changes, spark plugs, carburetor issues if it sits unused too long. A power station just needs to be charged. There's no fuel to stockpile, nothing to winterize, and nothing that degrades from sitting idle the way stale gasoline does.
A generator is often cheaper upfront, but fuel, oil, and maintenance add up every year it's used, and a neglected unit can fail exactly when you need it most. A power station costs more initially, but there's nothing recurring to buy or maintain, and it's ready the moment you charge it.
If your outages are short, if you want something that can live indoors, or if you're mainly protecting a fridge, router, and a few devices, a power station covers that without the noise, fumes, or upkeep. If you're regularly facing multi-day outages with no way to recharge, or you need to run high-draw tools and appliances for extended stretches, a generator, or a generator paired with a power station for the quiet stuff, is worth the tradeoff.
